Koru Mindfulness Teacher
Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk
Kristine Hurst-Wajszczuk’s introduction to meditation was in second grade when her mother taught her deep breathing exercises. A classical singer with two CDs (one release by Naxos in 2020; the other released by Centaur in 2008), her dissertation focused on managing performance anxiety in singers. While her own research helped her conquer her brief struggle with stage fright, deepening her meditation practice has made the biggest impact in both her life and that of her students.
Dr. Hurst-Wajszczuk’s annual seminars on wellness for students of all majors in the Honors College at UAB include the Koru sequence, and her Wellbeing for Musicians course was recently added to the UAB Music curriculum. She is also a Licensure Trainee through the Association of Body Mapping Educators and has been studying the Alexander technique since 1995. Since the beginning of the pandemic, she has presented over 50 mindfulness workshops for music programs in universities around the country, for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) regional, national, and international conferences. At UAB, she regularly offers meditation workshops for the Graduate School, the Collat School of Business, Resilient Leaders, the Haddin Series, UAB Arts in Medicine, and the Mental Health Ambassadors.
