These are just a few of the words that help describe me. I have been a meditation and mindfulness practitioner for more than two decades, yet I continue to learn about myself and my practice every time I sit. I enjoy learning with my students; my classes emphasize the importance of community in a meditation and mindfulness practice. I view mindfulness as an opportunity for lifelong growth, to always keep discovering more about myself, to always be developing tools that allow me to create the life I want to live and the communities I want to live in through learning to take care of the present moment.
In terms of my social location, I am a white, queer, middle-class woman in her 40s. I grew up in a small, rural, predominantly white community in southern Illinois, where much of my family still lives, and where the only acceptable identity was white, conservative, and Christian. I left home at 17 to attend university, working straight through from my B.A. to my PhD over the course of ten difficult yet amazing years. As an adult, I have lived and worked at universities in southern Indiana, St. Louis, and South Texas. Despite extensive travels, I have always considered myself a Midwesterner, and I feel most at home in this part of the country. Today, I am married to a white, heterosexual, middle-class man. We live with our daughter, our only child, on lands that belonged to the Miami, Kaskaskia, and Kickapoo tribes.
